As a travel advisor, one of the questions I'm frequently asked is whether or not travel insurance is necessary for domestic trips. ![]() The answer is unequivocal: yes! Regardless of where you're traveling or the reason for your trip, travel insurance offers a wide range of benefits that can help you in unexpected, stressful situations. In this article, I will discuss some of the benefits of having travel insurance, and why it is so important. Medical Emergencies: One of the biggest benefits of having travel insurance is that it can cover unexpected medical emergencies, regardless of whether you’re traveling abroad or within the US. Many people think that their health insurance will cover any emergency medical costs they incur while on a trip. Unfortunately, this is often not the case, as your health insurance may not be accepted by healthcare providers outside your network, as well as it may not cover certain types of medical expenses, such as evacuation expenses or transportation to a medical facility. For instance, suppose that during your domestic trip, you experience an emergency like an unexpected injury, and you need to be flown to the nearest hospital or medically equipped facility. In that case, your health insurance may not cover the cost of the emergency air ambulance or helicopter ride. That's where travel insurance can help. Repatriation of Human Remains: In situations where the medical emergency is so grave that an individual doesn't survive, travel insurance can also help you. In the tragic event of a death, the cost of transporting human remains can be very expensive, with some estimates placing the average cost at around $10,000. It is worth noting that most health insurance policies do not cover this kind of expense. With travel indemnity, the traveler or their families will be covered, and they will not have to worry about the high expenses that come with the repatriation of human remains. Lost or Delayed Baggage: Nobody expects to lose their luggage or have it stolen, yet unfortunately, it does happen. Travel insurance can help with reimbursing the cost of things like clothes and other necessary items until the lost luggage is found or replaced. The insurance policy will vary, but in most cases, there will be a limit on the amount that can be claimed. Trip Delay or Interruption: Sometimes, unforeseeable circumstances like weather, political unrest, or any other unforeseen events can interrupt travel plans. This can be a problem not just for leisure travel, but especially for business travel. Travel insurance covers not just the cost of the unused portion of the trip, but also any extra expenses incurred if the traveler has to extend their stay due to the interruption or delay. Cancellation penalties: cancellation penalties are an essential aspect of travel insurance that can be of great benefit to travelers, especially when they have to cancel a trip for any reason outside their control. Cancelations happen for a variety of reasons such as illness, work emergencies, or weather issues. Some trips, such as cruises or international flights, often require extensive planning and deposits that can add up to a significant amount of money, with the possibility of losing a substantial sum if you’re forced to cancel your trip. In such scenarios, travel insurance can be a lifesaver as it can protect you from paying penalties, and help recover any non-refundable costs. Additionally, cancel-for-any-reason coverage is an appealing option available to travelers, giving them the option to cancel for virtually any reason outside of unforeseeable acts of nature. This type of coverage can be costly, but when unexpected events like pandemics occur, it can be more valuable than ever. If a traveler has cancel-for-any-reason coverage, they can cancel their trip for any reason without needing a qualifying excuse or waiting for a vendor to cancel or cancel their trip only for the most serious emergencies, such as illness or a family emergency. It's worth noting that cancel-for-any-reason coverage has its limits. For instance, if the traveler cancels, they won't receive a 100% refund of the trip costs. Instead, they may receive between 50-75% of the trip cost, depending on the individual terms of the policy. A comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers cancelations can be invaluable to travelers, reducing the financial burden that can arise when unforeseeable events force them to cancel their travel plans. While cancel-for-any-reason coverage may be a more expensive option, it provides additional flexibility for individuals who may need to cancel their trip for reasons that aren't usually covered by traditional plans. It's very important to read and familiarize yourself with your travel indemnity policy to identify any limits or restrictions that may apply. Travel insurance is very essential for domestic trips, not just international trips. Medical emergencies that occur while traveling can have devastating financial and emotional impacts on individuals and their families. Travel indemnity can provide a safety net and peace of mind that you will be covered in case of any unforeseen travel emergencies. It's very important to read and familiarize yourself with your travel indemnity policy to identify any limits or restrictions that may apply. Share the knowledge
